School magazine

As the first task of my AS media I was to create a front cover of a school magazine. I looked at a lot of different types of school magazines to get a feel of where I should put the mid-shot photo and title etc.

For example, this magazine that I looked at has a picture which takes up the whole of the front page and the title of the magazine being placed at the top. There isn't much writing on the front cover which gives a feel of it being more professional. The bold writing makes it clear and to the point, the colour scheme throughout the front cover is eye catching which is what you need for a magazine as you want the buyer to see it and instantly want to buy it.

Your first impressions of this magazine is unprofessional and messy. By looking at this you can see a child has produced it. The colour's do not have a theme and the picture certainly doesn't look professional. It does not look slick or nor is it easy on the eye. Comparing it to the first magazine no-one would choose this on a shelf of a supermarket or newsagents.

When designing a magazine you have to look at every point from how smart the student looks on the front cover, to the colour of text you're using, to the font and even the layout. From looking at these two magazines, I could see that.
Firstly I started to plan out my magazine..

I sketched some of the main templates i.e where I was going to position my title and picture (The whole picture for some reason wouldn't upload). I then found a student and started creating my front page.

The image we took was mid-shot of a student, as we were asked to do.

We then proceeded to create the actual front cover. It is a little bit different to the plan only because we played around with the positioning of things etc. We used a sans serif font as we felt it would be easy on the eye and more friendly for younger readers. I feel that the design looks very slick and professional as we kept the colour scheme the same throughout the piece and kept it fairly simple.

We used sell lines which we thought would bring the reader in and which were positive. We used San Serif font throughout the piece to give it more of a personal and relaxed feel. And we thought it would encourage the pupils to take a look at the magazine to.

This is my final product, hope you enjoy.

  1. Can you analyse your magazine cover using media terminology, like sell lines, font, masthead, etc. Could you also blog what you have learned about ideology and representation in music, what denotation and connotation mean in terms of media, and what you have learned about research and what methods you will use and why.
